The 42" unit is designed for door openings from 36" to 40". You need to assemble the door, but it is easy to do so. You must have at least 90 1/8" of clearance from floor to ceiling. The door does not come with a headboard, which would be needed in two cases: if the studs do not align with the pre-drilled holes in the rail, or if the combined depth of the door and trim exceeds 2".
